Plagiarism

What is Plagiarism?

As; “to steal and pass off ideas or words of another as one’s own”. Simply put, plagiarism is the process of taking other people’s words and/or ideas and pretending that they are your own. An alternative definition of plagiarism is forwarded by the Collins Dictionary which explains that plagiarism is the practice of using someone else’s work and pretending that it is your own. Plagiarism can also be defined as the act of deliberately trying to deceive your academic tutor by submitting content which is not your own work.

How Does Plagiarism Happen?

Plagiarism happens for a number of reasons—one is because some students decide consciously to gain credit for the work of others. However, most incidents of plagiarism are not the product of deliberate cheating but of underdeveloped academic skills.

Plagiarism, in these cases, is a consequence of a lack skills needed to be successful in a tertiary learning environment. If you develop these skills, your chances of being accused of plagiarism will be greatly reduced.

Five cases happen in the Philippines

THE KRIP YUSON SITUATION

The accusation: In a blog entry posted on April 6, 2011 sports blogger Jaemark Tordecilla compared veteran writer Krip Yuson’s article on the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) published in Rogue magazine and a GMA News Online article by sportswriter Rey Joble on the late PBA commissioner Rudy Salud. Tordecilla observed, "Almost the whole middle section of Yuson’s article was lifted directly from it (Joble’s article). Whole paragraphs were copied, with very minor changes made."

The response: Shortly after the blog entry was published, Yuson sent an email to Tordecilla which the latter posted on his blog. Yuson wrote, "I may have mistakenly thought that since I had rewritten Rey Joble’s draft for GMA News Online, I was at least part-author of it. While that is moot, I should at the very least have credited Rey for the original draft. Again, my fault. I own up to it."

The aftermath: While there were some members of the Filipino writing community members who were mad as hell about Yuson’s plagiarism, there were also those who said he should be forgiven because he owned up to it anyway. Tordecilla likewise said that he found Yuson’s apology sincere.

THE "IT’S MORE FUN IN THE PHILIPPINES" SLOGAN

The accusation: By January 2011, the Department of Tourism (DOT) "It’s more fun in the Philippines" campaign had replaced the battered "Pilipinas kay ganda" campaign. But, it wasn’t long before people were also slamming it for ripping off a 1951 Swiss tourism slogan that read, "It's more fun in Switzerland."

The response: DOT Secretary Ramon Jimenez, Jr. was unfazed by controversy over the slogan or tagline.  He said it was "purely coincidental." Instead, he and his team worked to make the campaign viral. For some reason, people were more forgiving with this fun campaign. Or maybe they were still weary from getting enraged over "Pilipinas kay ganda."

The aftermath: "It’s more in the Philippines" is  DOT’s the current tourism campaign. For a time, it fueled a meme frenzy.

The gist: Parts of Sotto’s two speeches on his stand on the controversial RH bill were lifted from different online sources, drawing an online firestorm.

What Sotto did: While Sotto initially denied plagiarizing parts of his first RH bill speech (saying “blogger lang iyon,” drawing even more flak), his then-chief of staff, Atty. Hector Villacorta, admitted that they copied the work of American blogger Sarah Pope. A day later, it was found that Sotto’s staff writers also copied from different websites for the senator’s second speech. But this time, Villacorta defended the senator and stressed that “blogs are public domain.”

What happened next: Like Sotto, Villacorta saw himself at the receiving end of criticism, with netizens calling him “stupid” and “arrogant.”

SC Justice Mariano del Castillo’s ruling on comfort women

The gist: In what is dubbed as a first in the Supreme Court, a decision penned by Associate Justice Mariano del Castillo on World War II comfort women showed that numerous parts were copied from materials written by legal experts abroad without proper attribution. An impeachment complaint was then filed against him over the incident.

What del Castillo did: Castillo’s lawyer, Atty. Louie Oximer, said early in 2012 that the SC justice’s alleged plagiarism is not a high crime and therefore cannot be considered an impeachable offense.

What happened next: Last May, then-Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile hinted that Del Castillo was safe from impeachment, saying that the case against him should be a “mere civil damage suit and not an impeachment case.”

MVP’s graduation speech

The gist: Prominent businessman Manuel V. Pangilinan was in hot water after it was found that parts of his speech during Ateneo’s commencement exercises in 2010 were lifted from passages of other graduation remarks. It was later discovered that MVP’s previous speeches had similarities with those made by other well-known figures such as then-United States President Barack Obama.

What Pangilinan did: The telco executive immediately issued an apology and offered to retire from his duties in Ateneo, but the university’s board of trustees rejected it. The businessman then tendered his “irrevocable” resignation and relinquished the honorary degree conferred on him.

What happened next: Pangilinan eventually regained the public’s trust for being “man enough” to take full responsibility for the actions of his speech writer, whose name was not disclosed. Last year, the businessman joked about not giving any graduation speeches in the future, calling it “toxic” to one’s health.

Internet Threats and Scandal

My name is Roddyn Jaye T. Morales, 17 years old, studied at Tagum National Trade School Grade 11 - Grace. My experience about this topic is having my Facebook account hacked by an unknown person. Three months from now my Facebook is being hacked, I don't know what to do because this phenomenon is rarely happen to me, so i decided that I will recover it, so i search and search on how to recover your account, but there is no information how to recover it. So i tried recover it from my own instinct, in the middle of my operation, i will open my Gmail account and i receive a message coming from Facebook that the last time my account change its password is last night and the location is Bincungan Tagum City, Davao del norte. So in the end I surrender recovering my account and I hope that my next account cannot experience anymore, because there is a lot of memories being wasted.

My second experience is there is one human being having a Facebook account and made a scandal via posting it on Facebook and there are many people who disagree to it and also me, because his post is talks about Saitama can beat Guko. There are lot people triggered by that post especially Dragon Ball fans and later by later the comment section is very harsh at that moment because they release some words that cannot accept on the humans brain and me just chilling supporting the Dragon Ball fans but I didn't release those words because i don't want people hate me. Furthermore the comment section is being silenced but there is one idiot who support the post and triggered it, So there is no ending about this I log out on my Facebook account and start sleeping.

My ICT Experiences

My name is Roddyn Jaye T. Morales, my experiences in ICT is about Video Games and Social Media, I have so many experience about ICT so, the first is Video Games. My experience in Video Games is Dota 2, Apex Legends and Mobile Legends.

Dota 2 ( Defense of the Ancient), this game is very challenging because you need to find a way to strengthen your character, the way you strengthen your character is Farming in the Neutral Creeps, Lane Creeps and Killing Enemy. My favorite character is Skywrath, is a ranged intelligence hero equipped with tremendously powerful nukes, able to enhance magical damage and thus scales well into late game. However, he is a proverbial glass cannon; while he can bring superb amounts of damage, he is dangerously vulnerable and will most likely meet a swift end if the player isn't careful. Arcane Bolt is his main spell; its damage is based on his current Intelligence level. Concussive Shot blasts the nearest enemy hero, along with nearby units around the foe, slowing them down. The Ancient Seal marks the target with magic amplification and silence, leaving the target vulnerable to magic and unable to cast spells. Skywrath Mage's ultimate Mystic Flare is one of the most dangerous nukes in the game. Enemy heroes caught in this field will suffer massive damage. Its power is split equally among enemy heroes within its radius; if it is used on a single hero, it will deal its full damage potential. His spells are most effective when targeted on a lone hero and thus suffer decreased effectiveness when used on groups.

Apex Legends, this game is new and not so popular in the Philippines but I promise that this game is very fun and exciting, because this game is have twist compare to the other battle royale games, every Legends has a unique ability to engage enemy to Champion the game just like Octavio Silva A.K.A. Octane, this Legend is very fun because the way he engage battle is very unique compare to other Legends. His tactical ability allows him to move faster than normal, but costs a percentage of his health to activate and only lasts a few seconds. To offset this, Octane’s passive ability grants him healing whenever he isn’t being shot at, allowing him to slowly gain back the health he has either lost or spent.Octane’s ultimate ability is called Launch Pad. He can throw launch pads on the ground that allow anyone to boost into the air.

ML (Mobile Legends), this game is also fun and challenging, because this game has similarities in Dota 2 but the difference is when the minions is being killed in you are in the range of the minions you can gain its money. My favorite hero is Khufra (Tank). Khufra a tyrant tank that was awakened from his slumber with hatred and anger. With the set of skills, he specializes in crowd control and as an initiator. Partner him up with heroes like Ruby or Vale, it can give chills to any lane, and magnificent gank styles. This is a dash skill with insane range and can get pass through walls. The longer you charge, the farther he can travel, and he will immediately stop when he hit the first enemy hero. Khufra's second skill will wrap himself with a bandage and turns into a bouncing ball that deals magic damage every time he hits the ground. It also slows the enemy down, slightly increases his movement speed, and his Physical and Magical defense will increase by 100%. This skill will pull enemies around him or rather to the direction you cast it. Although it has a very short range, it still deals physical damage and slow down effect. Every 12 seconds, this skill increases his next basic attack range. It deals magic damage that was based on 8% of Khufra's Max HP, has slow down effect and it also heals him after hitting the enemy.
